What It Really Costs to Study Abroad in 2027: Tuition, Living and Visa Money, Country by Country (in ₹)

In this article
Every year, families put together a budget for studying abroad that turns out to be a tuition figure with a guess attached. The guess is where the trouble starts. Tuition is published, fixed and easy to find; the rest — the money each visa system makes you prove, the health surcharge, the deposit, the currency margin on every transfer — is scattered across government sites and university PDFs, and it moves. This guide gathers the real numbers for a 2027 start in the five countries Indian students choose most, converts them to rupees at this week’s rates, and points out what you will need to prove and when.
Exchange rates used throughout, from 17 September 2026: USD ₹96.02 · GBP ₹128.90 · EUR ₹110.46 · CAD ₹68.80 · AUD ₹68.27. They will move by the time you pay; the point is to compare like with like.

United States
Tuition
The widest range of any destination. A master’s at a good public university typically runs USD 30,000–45,000 a year (₹28.8–43.2 lakh). Selective private universities charge USD 55,000–65,000 (₹52.8–62.4 lakh), and a handful of flagship programmes exceed that: Stanford’s MS in Computer Science is published at USD 21,180 per quarter, about USD 127,000 for the full degree, and Carnegie Mellon’s machine-learning master’s exceeds USD 100,000 in total tuition.
Living costs and proof of funds
Budget USD 15,000–25,000 a year (₹14.4–24 lakh) depending on the city; universities publish an official estimate on the I-20 and the visa officer expects to see that figure covered. Before a university issues the Form I-20, it must see evidence for the full first year — tuition, living costs, books and travel. There is no fixed national figure; it is whatever the I-20 says.
Visa and other fixed costs
SEVIS fee USD 350 and visa application fee USD 185, roughly ₹51,000 together. Health insurance is usually mandatory through the university at USD 2,000–4,000 a year. One-way flights from India run ₹60,000–1,20,000.
All-in, one year: ₹50 lakh at a public university to ₹90 lakh-plus at an elite private one. See how the numbers work in a loan on our USA education loan page.
United Kingdom
Tuition
One-year taught master’s degrees are the UK’s advantage. International fees range from about £22,000 (₹28.4 lakh) at many universities to £46,000 (₹59.3 lakh) for the most expensive computing and AI programmes at Imperial and Edinburgh. Business and finance master’s at top schools sit at the upper end; humanities and social sciences at the lower.
Living costs and proof of funds
The visa requirement is fixed by law and rising. Until 29 November 2026 you must show £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 outside for up to nine months. For visa applications from 30 November 2026, the figures become £1,570 and £1,203 — a maximum of £14,130 (₹18.2 lakh) in London or £10,827 (₹14 lakh) elsewhere — under Statement of Changes HC 584. The money must sit in a regulated account for 28 consecutive days before you apply. Real living costs in London usually exceed the official figure; plan on £16,000–20,000.
Visa and other fixed costs
The Student visa fee is £524, and the Immigration Health Surcharge is £776 for each year of the visa, paid upfront — about ₹1.7 lakh for a one-year master’s including the surcharge. A CAS deposit of £2,000–5,000 is common before the CAS is issued.
All-in, one year: ₹45–80 lakh. The one-year format keeps the total below a two-year US or Australian degree even when the annual fee is higher. Details on the UK education loan page.

Canada
Tuition
International graduate tuition ranges from roughly CAD 25,000 (₹17.2 lakh) at mid-sized universities to CAD 60,000 (₹41.3 lakh) for professional and applied programmes at Toronto, UBC and Waterloo. The University of Toronto’s research MSc in Computer Science is CAD 36,700 for 2026–27 including incidental fees; its applied computing master’s costs considerably more.
Living costs and proof of funds
For study permit applications from 1 September 2026, a single applicant outside Quebec must show CAD 23,448 (₹16.1 lakh) for living expenses, plus first-year tuition, plus travel. Many Indian students meet the living-cost element with a Guaranteed Investment Certificate from a Canadian bank; a loan sanction can fund it. Canada also remains under an international student cap, with provincial attestation letters required for most applicants.
Visa and other fixed costs
Study permit CAD 150 plus biometrics CAD 85 — about ₹16,000. Provincial health cover varies; some provinces charge international students CAD 600–900 a year.
All-in, one year: ₹35–60 lakh. Two-year programmes double the tuition but not the visa costs. More on the Canada education loan page.
Australia
Tuition
Master’s tuition at the Group of Eight universities runs AUD 45,000–54,000 a year (₹30.7–36.9 lakh); Monash, ANU and UTS publish AUD 52,000–54,000 for their AI master’s. Universities such as Western Sydney, Curtin and La Trobe charge AUD 36,000–41,000 (₹24.6–28 lakh). Most master’s degrees are two years, so total tuition is typically AUD 70,000–110,000.
Living costs and proof of funds
The Department of Home Affairs requires evidence of AUD 29,710 (₹20.3 lakh) in living costs for the primary applicant for twelve months, plus tuition and travel, plus AUD 10,394 for a partner and AUD 4,449 per child. Actual living costs in Sydney and Melbourne are close to this figure; in Adelaide, Perth and regional cities they are lower.
Visa and other fixed costs
The student visa application charge has been AUD 2,000 (₹1.37 lakh) since July 2025 — the highest of the five countries; confirm the current charge before paying. Overseas Student Health Cover is mandatory, at roughly AUD 600–800 a year for a single student.
All-in, one year: ₹48–62 lakh. Two-year degrees make Australia one of the more expensive totals despite moderate annual fees. See the Australia education loan page.
Germany
Tuition
Most public universities charge no tuition, only a semester contribution of about €300–400 (₹33,000–44,000) that usually includes public transport. The important exception is Bavaria: Technical University of Munich charges non-EU master’s students €4,000 or €6,000 per semester depending on the programme — €8,000–12,000 a year (₹8.8–13.3 lakh) — with a one-off TUM scholarship of €500–1,800 available to some international students. Private universities charge €10,000–20,000 a year.
Living costs and proof of funds
The blocked account (Sperrkonto) must hold €11,904 (₹13.1 lakh) for the year, released at €992 a month. Real costs in Munich and Frankfurt run higher — around €1,100–1,300 a month — while smaller university towns come in under the blocked amount.
Visa and other fixed costs
Student visa fee €75. Health insurance around €130 a month for students under 30. Blocked-account providers charge €50–150 in setup fees.
All-in, one year: ₹15–18 lakh at a tuition-free university, ₹25–32 lakh at TUM. Germany is the lowest total cost by a wide margin. See the Germany education loan page.

The costs that are not on any fee page
- Currency margin. Banks and remittance services take 1–3% on each transfer. On ₹40 lakh over a degree that is ₹40,000–1,20,000. Lenders that disburse directly in the foreign currency avoid one leg of it; see dollar-denominated loans.
- Loan processing fees. Public-sector banks often charge none on study-abroad schemes; NBFCs charge 1–2% plus GST. Our processing fees and hidden charges page lists what to ask.
- Deposits. Tuition deposits of ₹1.5–5 lakh are usually due before the loan is disbursed, so a family needs that liquidity in April or May.
- Moratorium interest. Interest accrues during the course even when repayment has not started; many lenders let you pay simple interest monthly to stop it capitalising.
- Exam and application fees. ₹1–2 lakh across tests, score reports and eight to ten applications is normal.
How the loan fits the number
Once you have a total, the funding question is which route covers it on the best terms. Public-sector banks lend up to ₹3 crore against collateral and, at SBI, up to ₹50 lakh unsecured for universities on its list, at rates from about 8.25%. NBFCs lend without collateral on the strength of the co-applicant and the university, from roughly 11.25%, and sanction in days. Our secured vs unsecured and NBFC vs bank guides set out the trade-offs, and the eligibility calculator gives a first estimate.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a master’s abroad cost in rupees in 2027?
Roughly ₹30–45 lakh a year all-in in Germany at a tuition-free public university rising to ₹80 lakh or more a year at expensive US private universities. The UK, Canada and Australia mostly sit between ₹40 and ₹65 lakh a year including living costs, at September 2026 exchange rates.
Which country makes you prove the most money for a visa?
Australia, at AUD 29,710 (about ₹20.3 lakh) in living costs on top of tuition and travel. Canada asks for CAD 23,448 (about ₹16.1 lakh) plus tuition; the UK for up to £14,130 in London (about ₹18.2 lakh) plus any unpaid tuition; Germany for a €11,904 blocked account (about ₹13.1 lakh).
Does an education loan count as proof of funds?
Yes. A sanction letter from a bank or NBFC is accepted evidence for the US I-20, the UK CAS and visa, the Canadian study permit, the Australian Genuine Student assessment and the German blocked account, provided it is issued before the university or consulate asks.
What costs do students most often forget?
Health cover (the UK’s Immigration Health Surcharge is £776 a year), the visa fee itself (Australia’s is AUD 2,000), flights, accommodation deposits, the 1–3% currency margin on every transfer, and lender processing fees of 1–2% plus GST on NBFC loans.
