Most study-abroad timelines are written backwards from the day you fly. This one is written forwards from today, September 2026, because that is where you are standing. It assumes a September or autumn 2027 start in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia or Germany, and it treats funding as part of the admissions process rather than something that happens afterwards — because in practice, the students who reach August 2027 calmly are the ones who dealt with money in November 2026.

September–October 2026: shortlist, tests and the first deadlines
Build a shortlist you can afford
Aim for eight to ten programmes across two or three countries. Put a total cost against each one — tuition plus the living-cost figure that country’s visa requires — before you fall in love with a ranking. Our companion article, what a year abroad costs in 2027, does that arithmetic in rupees, and the loan eligibility calculator gives you a first view of what is borrowable.
Decide which tests you actually need
The testing landscape has changed more in the last two years than in the previous ten. The GRE is now optional or waived at more than 60% of US universities for many graduate programmes, and the decision is made department by department and reviewed every year. Columbia Engineering, Stanford’s computer science programmes and Purdue’s MS in computer science are among those that no longer require it. Where it is optional, a good score still helps a borderline profile; where it is not required, spend the preparation time on your statement instead.
For English, the Duolingo English Test is now accepted by more than 3,100 US institutions, including roughly 95% of the US News top 100 for undergraduate study and most graduate programmes with large international cohorts. Acceptance in the UK, Canada and Australia has also widened. Two cautions: the TOEFL iBT moved to a new 1–6 score scale in January 2026, so check which scale a programme quotes, and some visa routes still expect IELTS or TOEFL rather than DET. Confirm both the university and the visa requirement before you pay for a test.
Start the statement and the references
Ask recommenders in September. Give them your CV, the programme list and the deadlines; a professor writing for five students will thank you for a one-page summary of what you did in their class. Draft the statement of purpose now and rewrite it in October. The best statements answer three questions plainly: why this field, why this programme, and what you will do with it.
Deadlines that fall in this window
- 6 October 2026: Chevening 2027–28 closes (UK master’s; two years’ work experience required).
- 15 October 2026: UCAS for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry, veterinary science.
- October 2026: Commonwealth and several DAAD deadlines. Australian February-intake applications at the top universities.
November 2026: early rounds and the money conversation
US Early Decision and Restrictive Early Action close on 1 November. Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science early deadline is 18 November. If you are applying ED, remember it is binding — you will have committed before you can compare offers or funding, which is exactly why you should know your loan position first.
This is the month to open the funding file. A lender does not need an admit to assess your family’s profile: co-applicant income, existing liabilities, whether collateral is available and what it is worth, and which route — a public-sector bank, a private bank or an NBFC — suits the amount and the destination. A pre-admission assessment in November turns into a sanction letter within days of the admit in March, instead of a scramble in April.
Also on 30 November 2026, the UK raises its Student visa maintenance requirement to £1,570 a month in London and £1,203 outside London. If you will apply for a UK visa after that date, budget on the new figures now.

December 2026: the graduate deadline wall
Most US master’s programmes in computer science, engineering and data close between 1 December and 15 January. CMU’s final deadline is 9 December. The University of Waterloo’s graduate programmes commonly close on 1 December. Submit early where you can; portals slow down in the last 48 hours and referees miss reminders over the holidays.
Use the quiet second half of December to assemble the loan documents the lender will eventually want: identity and address proof, academic records, co-applicant income proof (salary slips and Form 16, or ITRs and business proof for self-employed families), and property documents if you are considering a secured loan. Our documents checklist lists everything by lender type.
January 2027: UCAS, Canada and US Regular Decision
- 13 January: UCAS equal-consideration deadline for all remaining undergraduate courses.
- 15 January: University of Toronto and McGill international graduate deadlines; several US programmes’ final dates.
- 1–15 January: US Regular Decision and ED II / EA II.
From 1 January 2027 the UK Graduate Route visa is granted for 18 months rather than two years for bachelor’s and master’s graduates. It does not affect your application, but it should feed into how you weigh the UK against Canada’s post-graduation work permit and Australia’s subclass 485.
February–March 2027: offers, comparisons, and Germany
Offers begin arriving. Resist accepting the first one. Lay out every offer with its total first-year cost, any scholarship, and the loan amount it would require, then compare lenders on that number. Rates in September 2026 range from about 8.25% at public-sector banks to 11.25% and above for unsecured NBFC loans, and the difference on a ₹40 lakh loan over ten years is not small. The compare loan options page explains what to look at beyond the headline rate: processing fees, moratorium interest, prepayment terms and disbursement in foreign currency.
Germany’s competitive programmes close in this window. TU Munich’s popular master’s programmes take applications until March or April 2027, well ahead of the official 15 July date. RWTH Aachen and LMU Munich use their own portals with programme-specific deadlines.
April–May 2027: accept, deposit, and get the sanction letter
Deposits are due, and this is where the paperwork chain matters. The US Form I-20 needs proof of first-year funds before it is issued. The UK Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies is issued after the deposit, and the visa then needs the maintenance funds held for 28 days. Canada needs proof of tuition plus CAD 23,448 living costs. Australia wants AUD 29,710 in living costs and a Genuine Student assessment. A lender’s sanction letter satisfies the funds requirement in each case — provided it exists by now.
If you built the file in November, the sanction follows the admit in days. If you did not, this is the month that costs students their September start. For Germany, the practical uni-assist deadline of 31 May 2027 also falls here.
June–July 2027: visas and disbursement
Book the visa appointment as soon as the I-20, CAS or CoE arrives; US consular slots in India fill fast in summer. Fund the blocked account for Germany (€11,904) or the GIC for Canada. Ask the lender to disburse tuition directly to the university in the required currency and confirm the university has received it — a receipt from the institution is often needed for the visa file. The disbursement process page walks through the sequence.
August–September 2027: departure
Arrange accommodation, health insurance where the university does not provide it, and a small buffer in a local account for the first month. Keep the sanction letter, disbursement receipts and fee receipts together; you may need them at the port of entry and you will need them for any subsequent disbursement.
What to do if you are starting late
If you are reading this in December or January, you have not missed the year. UK master’s courses and many Canadian and Australian programmes remain open into spring, Germany’s practical deadline is May, and July 2027 is a full intake in Australia. What compresses is the funding timeline, so start the loan assessment the same week you decide to apply. Our advisors are used to tight timelines; see how the fast approval process works and what it needs from you.
Frequently asked questions
Do I still need the GRE for Fall 2027?
Often not. Over 60% of US universities have waived or made the GRE optional for many graduate programmes, and policy is now set department by department. Check each programme page; where it is optional, a strong score can still help a borderline profile.
Is the Duolingo English Test accepted for 2027 admissions?
Widely. More than 3,100 US institutions accept it, including most of the US News top 100, and acceptance for graduate programmes and in the UK, Canada and Australia has grown. Some visa routes still expect IELTS or TOEFL, so confirm both the university and the visa requirement.
How early should I arrange the education loan?
Start the assessment in the same month as your first application deadline. Lenders can give a pre-admission or in-principle sanction that becomes a formal sanction letter once the admit and fee structure arrive.
What proof of funds will I need in 2027?
It depends on the country: full first-year costs for a US I-20; £1,570 or £1,203 a month for nine months in the UK from 30 November 2026; CAD 23,448 plus tuition for Canada; AUD 29,710 living costs for Australia; a €11,904 blocked account for Germany.
